why are some of the pivotal events of jesus' life as recorded in the gospels shamelessly borrowed from pagan predecessors?
the following list is not supposed to be exhaustive: immaculate conception, son of god, death and resurrection, the last supper celebrated with bread and wine, an incarnate god who dies on a cross to redeem all sins, .... h. .

The immaculate conception is linked to the doctrine of original sin - Mary is said to have been born naturally to human parents but she was kept without the stain of original sin, so it is she who was 'immaculately conceived'
The virgin birth refers to the birth of Jesus without an earthly father.

I've just been stuck in the weirdest time warp - I thought it was two hours later than it is until I just glanced at my computers clock!
as long as i can recall, i have always had at least three craft or needlework "projects" going at one time!
i have had a few "unproductive years" due to two strokes that affected my right side and the use of my fingers.
i tried a few things and then put them down in desperation.. recently i picked up a crochet hook again determined to figure out a way to get things working again.....and it is slow and very awkward but i can still crochet!.
A small plate or cup sunk to soil level filled with stale beer. The little buggers can't resist getting drunk and drowning.
I know about that trick too DJK - at least they die happy too eh lol! trouble is, I can't stand clearing out all the dead bodies
A keen gardener friend puts a band of copper wire round his plants - apparently, the slugs get an electric shock from it. I'll still try my carpet collars this year and see what happens.

The immaculate conception isn't recorded in the gospels.
However the virgin birth is - an entirely different doctrine.

Another gardener here - not a good one though lol! I grow the 'easiest' veg - potatoes, carrots, onions, turnip/swede and brussels sprouts/broccolli/cabbages (these usually get eaten by the slugs before I get to grow them big enough for me I have some carpet remnants this year though so I'll make collars for the bottom of the young plants.
I'm doing my theology degree too - not for a career as yet, so I guess you could call it a hobby!

Just checked back through the list - it was actually Count (edit) Raven which didn't impress me much! The music would have been fine minus the lyrics.

Maybe its because on the whole, I think I prefer metal without any lyrics (or as few as possible!).

what do you mean by God created science?
God put the laws of science in place. He also gave humans the intellect to pursue scientific knowledge - hence we are still learning the laws, we'll probably never fully know them.
Now, coming back to God's word in the Bible, taking the example of Saul's conversion experience - when it happened, the people who recorded the event didn't have sufficient scientific knowledge to explain it, now we do, he possibly had a seizure - BUT (this is important for you!) that doesn't discount Saul's experience - because as I wrote, God can use whatever means He wants to communicate His message.

I agree with that (for now!) Existence is. By definition, the past has ceased to exist, the future is yet to come into existence, how can there be anything other than the 'eternal now'?

i'm sitting out most of this thread and just reading, but here's my thoughts on a couple of things:
most scolars agree that the gospel of Thomas is agnostic it was written by a non-jew
What if 'most scholars' are wrong? How can it be proven? (I assume you meant gnostic rather than agnostic!). The possibility that we may actually have the wrong gospels doesn't worry me too much - I serve the living God to the best of my ability using my current knowledge, I don't serve the book. How about you real one?
